Define the reaction balance
Blow catalysts promote reactions associated with gas generation, while gel catalysts favor polymer build. Trimerization catalysts are important in selected PIR systems, and metal catalysts can provide strong gel or cure performance. A catalyst described simply as ‘for polyurethane’ is not enough information for a useful comparison.
Match catalyst behavior to the application
Flexible slabstock, molded foam, rigid insulation, spray foam, coatings and elastomers differ in density, cream time, rise profile, demold requirement and emissions target. Low-odor or reactive catalysts may be valuable where fogging or VOC performance matters, while delayed-action grades can improve processing latitude.
What to request before a trial
Share polyol type, isocyanate index, water level, density target, process temperature and required cream, gel, rise and tack-free times. Confirm catalyst purity or concentration, carrier, water content, color, packaging, storage and hazard classification. Laboratory screening and production trials remain essential.
