Essential Oil Sourcing: Botanical Identity, GC Profile, Oxidation and IFRA Review

Essential oils are natural complex substances rather than single, fixed molecules. Two materials sold under the same common name or broad CAS number can differ because of species, plant part, geographic origin, harvest, extraction method, fraction and storage history.

Define the botanical material beyond its common name

Begin with the Latin botanical name, chemotype where relevant, plant part, country or region of origin and extraction method. Rose flower oil, peppermint leaf oil, cold-expressed sweet-orange peel oil and different ylang-ylang distillation fractions are not interchangeable descriptions.

IFRA’s nomenclature for natural complex substances adds plant-part and processing information because a broad CAS number may not describe composition precisely enough. Procurement records should preserve this identity from sample approval through commercial shipment.

Use GC composition and sensory quality together

Request a batch GC profile or agreed marker ranges alongside relative density, refractive index, optical rotation where relevant, acid value, color and organoleptic assessment. Typical markers may include citronellol and geraniol in rose or geranium oils, linalool and linalyl acetate in lavender, menthol and menthone in peppermint, or limonene in citrus oils.

Marker ranges must be appropriate to the exact species, origin and processing route. Review adulteration risk, residual solvents when extraction is involved, pesticide or contaminant limits where relevant, microbiological expectations for the application and the authenticity documentation needed by the buyer.

Manage oxidation, packaging and IFRA information

Citrus, mint and other terpene-rich oils can change through oxygen, light, heat and metal contact. Define peroxide or oxidation controls where appropriate, compatible sealed packaging, headspace management, storage temperature, shelf life and re-test conditions. Smaller packs may be commercially sensible when usage is low.

Essential oils can contain constituents restricted by IFRA Standards. Supplier and user therefore need composition information and must evaluate the intended finished-product category; conformity for one application is not a universal approval. IFRA guidance also makes clear that its voluntary Standards do not replace national or local regulation, finished-product safety assessment or destination-market labeling requirements.
